Oconee Fall Festival

The main line

Cooked by the parish, all day

All the food on the grounds is made by parish volunteers in the same stands they have used for years. Nothing is catered and nothing is frozen. Come hungry — the lines move, but the food is worth standing in for.

Start here

The pork ribeye sandwich

If you only eat one thing, eat this. A thick-cut pork ribeye off the grill on a soft bun, the sandwich people drive in from three counties over for.

The Apple Shack

Its own little building behind the white lattice, with a chalkboard out front and a line that starts early.

The nutty bowl is apples topped with pecans. The dirty cider is cider, Sprite and sweet cream. Everything else is exactly what it sounds like.

Ribbon Fries

One potato, cut into a single unbroken spiral on the cutter and dropped straight into the fryer. Salted and handed over hot on a paper plate.

There is usually a line, and nobody in it seems to mind. If you are bringing a group, send somebody over early.

Load them up

Plain and salted is the classic, but the toppings are right there on the table — cheese, ranch, ketchup, bacon bits and vinegar. No extra charge and no limit on how much you pile on.

Look for the canopy on the east side of the grounds, next to the shed. If you can smell the fryer, you have found it.

Kettle Corn

Popped in the kettle out front all afternoon, stirred by hand and bagged while it is still warm. You can smell it from the parking field.

It goes out by the crate and it does not last. Most people buy one bag to eat on the grounds and a second one for the ride home.

Ice Cream

Fresh-churned on the grounds and served all afternoon, which on a warm Sunday in September is the best thing on the property.

It is the last stop for most families on the way back to the car, so the line builds up toward the end of the day.
